Aleksandr Vlasov sprinted to second place at the GP Gippingen, finishing on the podium after a dramatic finale in Leuggern.
The 62nd edition of the Swiss one-day race came down to a late selection on the final passage of the Rotberg, where Vlasov, Richard Carapaz and Liam Slock broke clear from the reduced group behind. Over the closing kilometres, Vlasov and Carapaz drove the move as the chasing group tried to close the gap, but the trio held on to contest the victory on the uphill finish.
Slock launched his sprint with 230 metres to go and opened a gap over Vlasov and Carapaz. As he began to celebrate just before the line, he lost control in the strong wind and crashed, sliding across the finish line to take the win. Vlasov crossed the line just behind to take second place.
Aleks Vlasov: “I think it was a good race for us. I felt quite good from the beginning and tried to save as much energy as possible for the finale. It was windy today, so it was important to stay in the right position and get into the right move. To arrive at the finish with three riders and take second place is a good result, after my short break following the Giro. I’m happy with the performance and it gives me confidence going into the Tour de Suisse.”
