The final stage of the seven-day race Tirreno-Adriatico (UCI 2.UWT) in central Italy was a day for the sprinters. While J. Milan took the stage win, Jai Hindley - 3rd overall - crossed the finish line safely within the bunch. The Australian thus secured his first overall podium of the year. The overall win went to J. Die Schlussetappe der siebentägigen Rundfahrt Tirreno-Adriatico (UCI 2.UWT) in Mittelitalien war ein Tag für die Sprinter. Beim Sieg von J. Jai Hindley secures overall podium at Tirreno-Adriatico

As the major races in Italy draw near, Matteo Sobrero feels the tension rise. There is always a strong hope that he will be selected once again. He has already competed in the Giro, Il Lombardia, and Milan-Sanremo three times each. Next weekend’s "La Primavera", however, the longest race of the season, spanning around 300 kilometers, remains something truly special. Matteo grew up less than 100 kilometres away from the course. “I grew up in Montelupo Albese near Alba in Piedmont”, he says. Barely 500 people live in the municipality. But there are countless vineyards there. “My parents are third-generation winegrowers. My sister and I will be the fourth.”&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/Getty_Images_2204919545_d8289576f2.jpg"></figure> At 27 years old, Matteo still has his best years as a professional athlete ahead of him, but the path for his life after that is already clear. “When I was still at school, I was already intensively involved with wine. I always said that I had a plan A and a plan B. Plan B was cycling. I always dreamed of becoming a professional, but at the same time I worked my way in at home. Then I swapped the two plans. Now I'm 100 percent dedicated to my career as a professional. But after that, I'll have time to look after the family business.”&nbsp; Whether it's Dolcetto, Barbera, Barolo, or Pinot Noir, the Sobreros' vineyards are home to a wide variety of grapevines, and Matteo is familiar with them all. His attention to detail is something that also serves him well as a professional cyclist. He explains, “They have a lot in common. You need to be patient. You have to build your season from the winter, both on the road and in the vineyard. It’s not just about the harvest. The same goes for cycling—you need dedication and passion in everything you do, on both fronts. They are really quite similar.” The love for vineyards is in his blood. But where does the connection to cycling come from? “As a child, when I was looking for my parents, who were working somewhere on the huge vineyard, I was always on my bike”, Matteo remembers the early days. “At some point, my father came to me and said: 'Okay, if you really like the bike, you should ride for a reason and not just for fun'. I decided to enter a local mountain bike race and I won it. Then I joined a small team nearby and had a lot of fun.”&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/MF_250107_Trainings_Camp_Mallorca_255683_38eb89e278.jpg"></figure> Matteo progressed through all the classes and turned professional with Dimension Data in 2018. He gradually developed into a time trial specialist. In 2021, he became the Italian champion in this discipline, and the following year, he won the final stage of the Giro d'Italia against the clock. “I love speed,” says Matteo, who also has a passion for motorsport, used to be a fan of Valentino Rossi, and would ride his own motorbike through the mountains when he wasn’t using his own power. “I like the freedom, and sometimes when the fitness is feeling good, it’s just the feeling of being in sync with your legs at that moment in time. It’s really something that makes you feel alive.” And then there is certainly the influence of Filippo Ganna. “We are really good friends,” says Matteo. “We train a lot together, we live close. Wenn in Italien die ganz großen Rennen anstehen, dann steigt auch bei Matteo Sobrero die Anspannung. Immer ist die Hoffnung groß, dass auch er wieder nominiert wird. Drei Mal ist er bereits den Giro gefahren, drei Mal die Lombardei-Rundfahrt und auch drei Mal Mailand-Sanremo. Vor allem die Primavera, das „Rennen in den Frühling“ am kommenden Wochenende, ist dabei aber immer noch etwas ganz Besonderes.&nbsp;Matteo ist keine 100 Kilometer entfernt von der Strecke groß geworden. „Ich bin in Montelupo Albese bei Alba im Piemont aufgewachsen“, sagt er. Im Gemeindegebiet leben kaum 500 Menschen. Dafür stehen dort unzählige Rebstöcke. „Meine Eltern sind in dritter Generation Weinbauern. Meine Schwester und ich werden dann die vierte.“&nbsp;Obwohl Matteo mit 27 Jahren seine besten Jahre als Profisportler noch vor sich hat, ist der Weg für die Zeit danach bereits klar. „Als ich noch in der Schule war, habe ich mich schon intensiv mit dem Wein beschäftigt. Ich habe immer gesagt, dass ich einen Plan A und einen Plan B habe. Plan B war der Radsport. Ich träumte immer davon, Profi zu werden, aber gleichzeitig habe ich mich zu Hause eingearbeitet. Dann habe ich die beiden Pläne getauscht. Jetzt widme ich mich zu 100 Prozent meiner Karriere als Profi. Aber danach werde ich Zeit haben, mich um das Familienunternehmen zu kümmern.“&nbsp;&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/Getty_Images_2204919545_f2be88d4cc.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Ob Dolcetto, Barbera, Barolo oder Pinot Noir – auf den Weinbergen der Sobreros wachsen die verschiedensten Reben. Matteo kennt sie alle. Eine Detailverliebtheit, die ihm auch als Profi entgegenkommt. Ohnehin sagt er: „Ich denke, dass sich Radfahren und der Weinanbau ziemlich ähnlich sind. Sie haben so viele Dinge gemeinsam. Man muss geduldig sein. Man muss seine Saison vom Winter an aufbauen, sowohl auf der Straße als auch bei den Reben. Es geht nicht nur um die Ernte. Beim Radsport ist es das Gleiche. Man muss auf beiden Seiten mit viel Engagement und Leidenschaft bei der Sache sein.“&nbsp;Die Liebe zu den Reben liegt ihm im Blut. Doch woher kommt die Verbindung zum Radsport? „Wenn ich als Kind auf der Suche nach meinen Eltern war, die irgendwo auf dem riesigen Weinberg gearbeitet haben, war ich immer mit dem Rad unterwegs“, erinnert sich Matteo an die Anfänge. „Irgendwann kam dann mein Vater zu mir und sagte: ‚Okay, wenn du das Fahrrad wirklich magst, solltest du aus einem bestimmten Grund fahren und nicht nur einfach so.‘ Ich beschloss, an einem lokalen Mountainbike-Rennen teilzunehmen, und ich gewann es. Dann habe ich mich einem kleinen Team in der Nähe angeschlossen und hatte dabei sehr viel Spaß.“&nbsp;<figure class="image image-style-align-center image_resized" style="width:75%;"><img src="https://bora-hansgrohe-cms.s3.eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/MF_250107_Trainings_Camp_Mallorca_255683_e0b0f99971.jpg"></figure>&nbsp;Matteo durchlief alle Klassen und wurde 2018 Profi bei Dimension Data. Er entwickelte sich mehr und mehr zum Zeitfahrspezialist. 2021 wurde er in dieser Disziplin Italienischer Meister, im Jahr darauf gewann er die Schlussetappe des Giro d’Italia im Kampf gegen die Uhr. „Ich liebe die Geschwindigkeit“, so Matteo, der deshalb wohl auch einen Hang zum Motorsport hat, früher Fan von Valentino Rossi war und auch selbst mit dem Motorrad durch die Berge fuhr, wenn er es nicht gerade mit eigener Antriebskraft machte. „Ich mag die Freiheit und manchmal, wenn die Fitness stimmt, das Gefühl, dass du und deine Beine in diesem Moment im echten Einklang sind. Das ist wirklich etwas, bei dem man sich lebendig fühlt.“&nbsp;Und dann ist da sicher auch noch der Einfluss von Filippo Ganna. „Wir sind sehr gute Freunde“, sagt Matteo. „Wir trainieren viel gemeinsam und leben in der Nähe.
