Roglič adds second place to his Vuelta legacy
Roglič finishes second overall after a strong three weeks at La Vuelta.
Primož Roglič secured second overall and a sixth career Vuelta podium, while Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe finished the three weeks with six stage podiums across the mountains, sprints and time trials.
Primož Roglič finished second overall at La Vuelta after three demanding weeks of racing from Monaco to Granada. The four-time winner ended the race 2:15 behind Enric Mas, with Felix Gall third at 2:44.
The result adds another chapter to Primož’s remarkable record at the Spanish Grand Tour. In seven Vuelta starts, he has now stood on the final podium six times: overall victories in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2024, third in 2023 and second in 2026. His only Vuelta without a final podium came in 2022, when he was forced to abandon the race.

This year’s result carried particular significance after a training crash severely disrupted Primož’s preparation before the Grand Départ in Monaco. Despite arriving at the race short of his planned preparation, he remained in the fight for the general classification throughout the three weeks. He took third on the demanding Alto de Aitana on Stage 9 and moved back into second overall with fourth place in the Stage 18 time trial in Jerez de la Frontera.

The team also collected six stage podiums during the race. Jordi Meeus was one of the most consistent sprinters of the Vuelta, finishing second in Roquetes on Stage 5 and again in Sevilla on Stage 17, as well as taking third places in Xeraco and Lorca on Stages 8 and 11.

Callum Thornley produced another of the standout performances in his first Grand Tour. After opening his Vuelta with fourth place in the Monaco time trial, the 23-year-old came within three seconds of a stage victory in Jerez, finishing second behind Stefan Küng on Stage 18. Primož was fourth and Finn Fisher-Black sixth on the same day, placing three Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe riders inside the top six, on a standout day of racing for the team.

The squad remained active deep into the final week, with Fisher-Black, Gianni Vermeersch, Callum Thornley and Luke Tuckwell all racing ahead of the GC group in assistance of Primož during the final mountain stage in the Sierra Nevada, underlining the team’s aggressive approach on the last major mountain opportunity of the race before Primož secured second overall.
After 21 stages, another chapter has been added to Primož’s remarkable Vuelta story. Four overall victories, a third place and now second in Granada make it six podiums from seven starts at a race that has defined so much of his Grand Tour career.

“Looking back at where I was a few weeks ago, finishing second was difficult to imagine, so in this case it feels like a victory. I came here after a very difficult preparation and really had to take it day by day, to see how I would progress and where we would end up. I’m very happy with how I improved throughout the race and with the final result. We did our best every day. In the end, Enric was stronger and he deserved this victory, so I’m also very happy for him. It has been a hard three weeks, but considering where I started, I can be very happy to finish the Vuelta like this.”
