A mountain finish with its steep ramps and a finish at over 1,600 metres - with its difficult elevation profile, the third day of the Giro Next Gen from Albese Con Cassano to the Passo del Maniva (144 kilometres) provided the stage for the first battle between the favourites for the overall classification. The Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe Rookies impressed with a strong team performance - led by Lorenzo Finn (Italy), who only just missed out on the Maglia Rosa in the U23 Giro d'Italia as stage runner-up behind Jarno Widar (Belgium). Finn is now second in the overall standings and leads the young rider classification as well as the ranking of the best Italian riders.
After his preparatory work, I attacked three kilometres before the finish - I was only beaten by Jarno Widar in the sprint.
"I can be satisfied with my performance. There were ups and downs today. We did a perfect job as a team up to the first climb, we were in a great position. Then unfortunately I crashed - that wasn't ideal, but I was able to catch up with the field again with the help of my team-mates. Luke (Tuckwell) was particularly strong on the final climb. After his preparatory work, I attacked three kilometres before the finish - I was only beaten by Jarno Widar in the sprint. Now it's time to challenge him. Now I have to recover from my crash, but we'll attack again in the next few days," said Finn at the finish.
Indeed, the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe Rookies impressed with their excellent tactical riding. When Jorgen Nordhagen attacked on the final climb, Luke Tuckwell's efforts ensured that the Norwegian was caught again. Tuckwell finished a strong fourth himself - and is now third in the overall standings. Also another rookie, Callum Thornley (Great Britain, tenth), made it into the top ten.
The fourth stage of the Giro Next Gen leads over 134 kilometres from Manerbio to Salsomaggiore Terme. The race ends on Sunday in Pinerolo.
