What makes the Ronde van Vlaanderen so special for you as a rider?
Flanders is by far the biggest race in Belgium. You already have the big classics before it – E3, Gent-Wevelgem – and those are great races, but then you arrive on Sunday and you see that there's still a massive difference. The people are already lining the roads at the start, all along the parcours. In Flanders, almost everybody makes a holy day of the Ronde. They come outside, they party together. In that sense, it's truly unique. There's nothing quite like it.
What is your best Ronde memory?
It has to be the first year we won it as a team. For every rider, just being part of the Tour of Flanders is already something special. But then having a teammate take the victory – that's on another level. Everybody in the team was just really, really happy and excited. For me, that's still the best memory. Let's hope we can create a new one on Sunday. An even better one.
What is the key skill you need to do well in this race?
Positioning is crucial. It's such a hectic race. But on top of that, you're looking at almost 280 kilometres. You need to keep something in the tank for that final hour, because when you hit the Kwaremont and the Paterberg for the last time after 260 kilometres, you really need to dig deep. If you've got reserves left at that point, it makes all the difference.
Remco is in really good shape. So I hope we can go for victory – with the team and with Remco.
What's the most crucial part of the race?
I think one of the key moments is the second passage of the Oude Kwaremont. Anyone who's ridden Flanders a few times knows this is where the race usually explodes. If you're having a good day, you can feel it there – you can survive. Then comes the next hard section with the Paterberg and the Koppenberg. But if you don't have the legs, you won't make it through that second Kwaremont in a good position. And from there, it's over.
What are your expectations going into this year's Ronde?
I'm very much looking forward to it. It's the first time for Remco, and the first time with Remco racing. That makes it a special moment in itself. The team in general is really strong, and I think we can have a lot of confidence going in. Remco is in really good shape. So I hope we can go for victory – with the team and with Remco.
