The 21-year-old Italian made it over the final climb of the day with the five-man lead group with a good 20 kilometres to go. His lead over the first chasers, which included Giovanni Aleotti, was a good half a minute. Together with his compatriots Giulio Ciccone and Lorenzo Fortunato, the Mexican Isaac del Tori and Léo Bisiauxaus from France, Giulio made it to the final four kilometres, which climbed again, with a sufficient lead.
"Unfortunately, the Frenchman was a bit smarter than us," said Giulio, who had to watch Bisiaux attack 700 metres before the finish. Before he could react, there was only the fight for the day's podium left. Giulio was only beaten by his strong sprinter namesake and finished third.

"I'm happy with that. I've moved up to second place in the overall standings. Let's see what else we can do." Roger Adrià, who started the day with the leader's jersey, was unable to follow the very best this time and lost the lead to the day's winner, who was only 22 seconds ahead of Giulio. Giovanni, who won the sprint of the chasing group and thus finished sixth, is also sixth overall, 40 seconds behind and thus also still within striking distance.

"Tomorrow will be a little quieter," said Giulio, looking ahead. "But then it counts on Saturday. But I'm confident." On the final day of the Vuelta a Burgos, a mountain finish awaits at the Lagunas de Neila. This is where the victory will be decided.
