In a chaotic race around Midvaal, heavily influenced by race control’s decisions, Johnson was unable to fight for victory due to a race neutralization and ultimately finished in fifth place. “Of course, I had bigger expectations for the road race,” Johnson admitted. “But sometimes, things don’t go as planned, and you can’t control the circumstances. Still, I take a lot of positives from this weekend. For the road race, there are always more variables at play. Unfortunately, due to organizational circumstances, he didn’t get the chance to truly race for the win. Direkt zum Auftakt zeigte das 16-jährige Talent von grenke - Auto Eder, dem U19-Team von Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe, eine starke Leistung im Einzelzeitfahren der Junioren und sicherte sich eindrucksvoll den südafrikanischen Meistertitel.Auf dem 22 Kilometer langen Kurs in Midvaal bewies Johnson sein Talent und erreichte das Ziel nach 26:51 Minuten mit einer Durchschnittsgeschwindigkeit von 49,162 km/h – eine beeindruckende Vorstellung in seinem ersten Jahr in der U19-Kategorie. „Dieser Sieg bedeutet mir enorm viel“, erklärte Johnson nach seinem Triumph. „Es ist mein erster nationaler Titel in der U19 und mein erster Erfolg für grenke - Auto Eder. The team will be managed by Gregor Gazvoda, with an ambitious goal: to prepare young riders for the WorldTour while aiming for maximum success.The four U19 riders who are already part of the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe family are Theodor August Clemmensen (DEN), Paul Fietzke (GER), Lorenzo Finn (ITA), and Romet Pajur (EST). Clemmensen is a versatile rider, recently winning the Swiss stage race Grand Prix Rüebliland. Fietzke is a silver medalist in the road race at the 2023 U19 World Championships and a bronze and silver medalist at this year’s European Championships. With numerous prestigious victories, the junior team of the WorldTeam Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe has once again solidified its exceptional position in international junior cycling. The season review is accordingly positive.Twenty victories at UCI level, multiple national titles, European Championship medals, and gold at the World Championships – this is the impressive track record of GRENKE - Auto Eder in the 2024 season. Based on the significance of these achievements, the team ends the year as the top U19 team in international junior cycling. As a result, the season review for the Raubling-based youth cycling team is overwhelmingly positive.The highlight of the year was undoubtedly the world championship title in the road race, claimed by the Italian youngster Lorenzo Finn. Finn celebrated an impressive solo victory at the championship in Zurich. After Emil Herzog (Germany) took gold in 2022, GRENKE - Auto Eder secured its second world title in three years. Additionally, Paul Fietzke (also from Germany) had won the silver medal in 2023. Entsprechend positiv fällt die Saisonbilanz aus.20 Siege auf UCI-Level, mehrere Titel bei Nationalen Meisterschaften, EM-Medaillen und Gold bei der Rad-Weltmeisterschaft – das ist die beeindruckende Erfolgsliste von GRENKE - Auto Eder in der Saison 2024. Gemessen an der Wertigkeit der Erfolge schließt man das Jahr damit als bestes U19-Team im internationalen Junioren-Radsport ab. Dementsprechend positiv fällt auch die Saisonbilanz der Raublinger Nachwuchs-Radsportmannschaft aus.Der Höhepunkt des Jahres war dabei zweifelsfrei der Weltmeister-Titel im Straßenrennen durch den italienischen Youngster Lorenzo Finn. Finn hatte bei den Titelkämpfen in Zürich einen beeindruckenden Solo-Sieg gefeiert. After 14 years, Christian Schrot, the Sports Director of the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe U19 team GRENKE - Auto Eder, is stepping down. We took this opportunity to sit down with him, look back on his time with us, and discuss the broader development of junior cycling.<h4>Christian, you led our U19 team, GRENKE - Auto Eder, for 14 years. How did your responsibilities and the team evolve during that time?</h4>Christian Schrot: I joined in the fall of 2010, back when the team was still called Auto Eder Bayern. At that time, we were purely a regional team, focussing on supporting the best cyclists from Bavaria. Over time, though, we’ve grown significantly. Today, we are firmly established in international cycling. My tasks haven’t really changed all that much: I’ve been responsible for team management, race planning, and rider coordination. As a sports scientist, I was also in charge of the athletes’ training. Another key aspect was acting as a mentor for the athletes, especially regarding their career paths and personal development. This is crucial in U19 cycling.<h4>How has junior cycling changed compared to when you first started? What would you say are the most significant changes?</h4>Christian Schrot: U19 cycling has undergone significant changes in recent years. When I started, the sport was still largely driven by club teams. Even in smaller UCI races, it was mostly clubs lining up. With the increasing professionalization, particularly with the growing involvement of WorldTeams, that’s no longer the case. Today, almost every major pro team has some sort of partnership with a U19 development structure. This has also raised the level of competition—not just in terms of speed, but also tactics. They are students and face the challenge of balancing sports and school. On top of that, they are still going through personal growth. The role of a professional U19 team is not only to support them athletically but also to help them find their way personally. Another key focus is to mold them into a team, which includes learning to be happy for the success of others and putting their own egos aside when necessary. This can be challenging at such a young age, but it’s one of our team’s strengths that we’ve consistently managed to achieve.<h4>GRENKE - Auto Eder is now considered the most successful U19 team in the world. What achievements or moments with the U19 team will you remember the most?</h4>Christian Schrot: The standout moments are, of course, the four world championship titles—Manuel Porzner’s title in the Scratch race on the track, Luis-Joe Lührs’ team pursuit title, and the two road world championships by Emil Herzog and Lorenzo Finn. Besides the individual successes, we’ve also been able to consistently reproduce such results. This consistency is what defines our team. Over the last three years, at the pinnacle of the season, the Road World Championships, we’ve built an incredible record: Emil Herzog’s world title in 2022, Paul Fietzke’s runner-up finish in 2023, and Lorenzo Finn’s world title in 2024.<h4>Lorenzo Finn’s world title was like the perfect ending to your journey. What will you miss the most about working with the U19 team?</h4>Christian Schrot: Yes, the world title with Lorenzo was definitely a crowning moment. It has always been a passion project for me to guide and develop this team over so many years. Together, we built something great—starting as a regional and growing into an internationally successful squad. Today, GRENKE - Auto Eder is an international top team. What I will miss the most is definitely the daily work with the riders, seeing their development, and reaching goals together. Nach 14 Jahren verlässt Christian Schrot, Sportlicher Leiter des Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe U19-Teams GRENKE - Auto Eder, unsere Mannschaft. Wir nahmen seinen Abschied zum Anlass, um mit ihm gemeinsam zurückzublicken und über die allgemeine Entwicklung des Junioren-Radsports zu sprechen.<h4>Christian, du hast 14 Jahre lang unsere U19-Mannschaft GRENKE - Auto Eder geleitet. Wie haben sich deine Aufgaben und das Team in dieser Zeit verändert?</h4>Christian Schrot: Ich bin im Herbst 2010 zu einer Zeit dazugestoßen, als die Mannschaft noch Auto Eder Bayern hieß. Damals waren wir ein rein regionales Team, mit dem Ziel, die besten bayerischen Rennfahrer zu fördern. Mit der Zeit sind wir aber immer weiter gewachsen und inzwischen im internationalen Radsport fest etabliert. Meine Aufgaben haben sich dabei gar nicht so sehr verändert: Ich habe mich um das Teammanagement, die Wettkampfplanung und die Fahrerplanung gekümmert. Als Sportwissenschaftler war ich zudem für das Training der Athleten zuständig. Ein weiterer wichtiger Aspekt war darüber hinaus, als Mentor für die Sportler zu agieren – gerade in Bezug auf ihre Karriereplanung und persönliche Entwicklung. Das ist im U19-Radsport essenziell.<h4>Wie hat sich der Junioren-Radsport im Vergleich zu deiner Anfangszeit verändert? Was sind aus deiner Sicht die größten Entwicklungen?</h4>Christian Schrot: Die Junioren-Szene hat sich in den letzten Jahren stark verändert. Zu Beginn meiner Zeit war der Radsport auf Junioren-Ebene noch sehr von Vereinsmannschaften geprägt. Selbst bei kleineren UCI-Rennen standen hauptsächlich Clubs am Start. Mit der zunehmenden Professionalisierung – vor allem durch den Einfluss der WorldTeams – hat sich das geändert. Heute gibt es kaum ein großes Profi-Team, das nicht eine Partnerschaft mit einer Nachwuchsstruktur pflegt. Dadurch ist auch das Niveau der Rennen gestiegen – sowohl in Sachen Geschwindigkeit als auch in Sachen Taktik. Was sind die größten Unterschiede in der Herangehensweise?</h4>Christian Schrot: Der größte Unterschied ist, dass U19-Fahrer noch Jugendliche sind, die viele verschiedene Aspekte in ihrem Leben bewältigen müssen. Sie sind Schüler und stehen vor der Herausforderung, Sport und Schule unter einen Hut zu bringen. Dazu kommt, dass sie noch in einer Phase der persönlichen Reifung stecken. Die Aufgabe einer professionellen U19-Mannschaft ist es, ihnen nicht nur sportlich, sondern auch persönlich zu helfen, ihren Weg zu finden. Ein großer Fokus liegt zudem darauf, aus den einzelnen Fahrern ein Team zu formen. Dabei geht es auch darum, dass die Jugendlichen lernen, sich für die Erfolge anderer zu freuen und das eigene Ego manchmal zurückzustellen. Das ist in einem so jungen Alter oft eine Herausforderung, aber es ist eine Stärke unseres Teams, dass wir das immer wieder geschafft haben.<h4>GRENKE - Auto Eder gilt heute als die erfolgreichste U19-Mannschaft der Welt. Welche Erfolge oder Momente im U19-Team werden dir besonders in Erinnerung bleiben?</h4>Christian Schrot: Besonders herausragend sind natürlich die vier Weltmeistertitel – darunter Manuel Porzners Titel im Scratch auf der Bahn, der Bahn-Titel von Luis-Joe Lührs in der Mannschaftsverfolgung und die beiden Straßen-WM-Titel durch Emil Herzog und Lorenzo Finn. So konnten wir in den letzten drei Jahren beim Saisonhöhepunkt, der Straßen-Weltmeisterschaft, mit dem WM-Titel von Emil Herzog 2022, dem Vize-Weltmeistertitel 2023 von Paul Fietzke und dem WM-Titel von Lorenzo Finn 2024 eine unglaubliche Bilanz erzielen und dies eindrucksvoll unterstreichen.<h4>Mit dem WM-Titel durch Lorenzo Finn ist dir sozusagen ein goldener Abschluss gelungen. Was wird dir am meisten an deiner Arbeit mit dem U19-Team fehlen?</h4>Christian Schrot: Ja, der WM-Titel mit Lorenzo war definitiv ein krönender Abschluss. Es war mir immer ein Herzensprojekt, dieses Team über so viele Jahre hinweg zu begleiten und zu entwickeln. Wir haben gemeinsam viel aufgebaut – von einem regionalen und nationalen Konzept hin zu einer international erfolgreichen Mannschaft. GRENKE - Auto Eder ist heute ein internationales Top-Team. Was mir am meisten fehlen wird, ist sicherlich die tägliche Arbeit mit den Fahrern, die Entwicklung zu sehen und Ziele gemeinsam zu erreichen. Only three days after becoming Road World Championship in Zurich, Lorenzo Finn triumphed at the Italian U19 race Olgiate Molgora-Ghisallo. This victory made him the first GRENKE - Auto Eder rider to win a race wearing the World Champion's jersey with the famous rainbow stripes.Winning in the World Champion’s jersey is a rare privilege in the U19 category. Since the World Championships are typically held at the end of the year and the older riders transition to the U23 level, only a select few have the chance to actually race in the iconic white jersey with rainbow stripes. Lorenzo Finn, however, did just that. The freshly crowned World Champion from Zurich lined up just three days after his triumph at the one-day race Olgiate Molgora-Ghisallo in his native Italy – and quickly claimed another victory. After 105.3 kilometers, the 17-year-old crossed the line solo, marking his first win as the reigning World Champion.Finn’s triumph is also a special moment for GRENKE - Auto Eder. Nur wenige Tage nach seinem WM-Triumph in Zürich triumphierte Lorenzo Finn beim italienischen U19-Rennen Olgiate Molgora-Ghisallo. Erstmals gewann damit ein GRENKE - Auto Eder Fahrer im Weltmeistertrikot mit den bekannten Regenbogenstreifen ein Radrennen.Ein Sieg im WM-Trikot ist in der Alterskategorie der U19 eine ganz besondere Angelegenheit. Da die WM zumeist am Jahresende stattfindet und die älteren Jahrgänge danach in die U23-Kategorie wechseln, ist es nämlich nur wenigen Fahrern vergönnt, das begehrte weiße Trikot mit den Regenbogenstreifen auch wirklich im Rennen zu tragen. Lorenzo Finn hat allerdings genau das geschafft. Der frischgebackene Weltmeister von Zürich startete nur drei Tage nach seinem WM-Triumph im Straßenrennen beim Eintagesrennen Olgiate Molgora-Ghisallo in seiner Heimat Italien – und holte prompt den nächsten Sieg. Nach 105,3 Kilometern überquerte der 17-Jährige als Solist die Ziellinie und feierte damit seinen ersten Erfolg als amtierender Weltmeister.Für GRENKE - Auto Eder ist Finns Triumph ebenfalls ein besonderer Moment. Der Italiener aus den Reihen von GRENKE - Auto Eder holt bei der Weltmeisterschaft in Zürich mit einem beeindruckenden Solosieg die Goldmedaille. Paul Fietzke (Deutschland) als Vierter und Theodor August Clemmensen (Dänemark) als Neunter runden das hervorragende Ergebnis der Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe U19-Fahrer ab.Lorenzo Finn ist Weltmeister. Der 17-jährige Italiener hatte im 127,2 Kilometer langen U19-Straßenrennen bei den Weltmeisterschaften in Zürich die besten Beine. Bereits 60 Kilometer vor dem Ziel hatte Finn erstmals attackiert, wurde aber von der Konkurrenz wieder gestellt. 20 Kilometer vor dem Schlussstrich konnte er mit einem erneuten Antritt aber auch die letzten verbliebenen Konkurrenzen distanzieren. Im strömenden Regen fuhr Finn einen uneinholbaren Vorsprung heraus und gewann schließlich mit 2:05 Minuten Vorsprung auf den Briten Sebastian Grindley und mit 3:06 Minuten Vorsprung auf den Niederländer Senna Remijn die Goldmedaille. Dahinter verpasste der Deutsche Paul Fietzke als Vierter (+ 3:06 Minuten) nur haarscharf die Bronzemedaille. Theodor August Clemmensen (Dänemark, + 6:45 Minuten) rundete als Neunter den starken Auftritt der GRENKE - Auto Eder Fahrer ab.Nach dem Titelgewinn durch den Deutschen Emil Herzog im Jahr 2022 geht die Goldmedaille damit auch bei den Weltmeisterschaften 2024 an einen Fahrer aus den Reihen von GRENKE - Auto Eder. Im vergangenen Jahr hatte Paul Fietzke zudem Silber gewonnen. Finns Erfolg ist damit einmal mehr ein Beleg für die hervorragende Nachwuchsarbeit des WorldTeams Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe. Für Finn ist es wiederum der Abschluss einer äußerst erfolgreichen Saison. Im Laufe des Jahres war er unter anderem italienischer Meister im Straßenrennen und im Zeitfahren geworden.
